Adult chat etiquette: make the conversation easier
Online chat is easier when both people have room to decide whether they enjoy it. A little attention to the profile, and a reasonable expectation about replies, goes a long way.
Read before you send
A bio may already answer what you were about to ask. It may also say that the person wants a type of contact you do not want. Read it and make the decision before sending a message. You save both people an unnecessary exchange.
When you do reach out, give them something to respond to. A short question about a detail in their profile works well. The first-message guide has examples if you are staring at an empty message box.
Allow for different reply habits
You might enjoy a quick back-and-forth while another person writes when they have a free evening. Neither habit tells you much on its own about their interest. If you start talking regularly, ask what pace works for them and explain yours.
Repeated messages asking why they have not replied can turn a comfortable exchange into a chore. Leave space. An activity indicator cannot explain what someone is doing or whether they have time to talk to you.
Check whether the direction suits both people
The fact that everyone here must be an adult does not settle what each person wants to discuss. Ask if you are unsure and accept the answer. Keep listening as the conversation develops; their preferences may differ from what you expected.
You can put the preferences that matter in your own profile. If you want text-only chat or prefer to stay on the site initially, say so. Our boundaries guide gives some plain wording.
Leave an exchange without a debate
If you have been talking for a while and want to stop, a brief explanation can be considerate. “I don’t think we’re looking for the same thing, so I’ll leave it here” is enough. You do not have to negotiate the decision or keep answering after you have made it.
Use block or report controls for unwanted contact and rule violations. You can read the community guidelines before starting. If you are 18 or older, Join SextingZone and give people a clear idea of the conversation you would enjoy.
