Snapchat Snapcode: Check Before You Scan

A Snapchat Snapcode gives someone a quick way to open a destination in Snapchat. That may be an account, though codes can also open other things. Check the result before adding someone or following a link, especially when the code came from a new contact.

What does a Snapchat Snapcode do?

Snapchat uses these scannable images for several purposes, including adding friends and opening websites. When the camera recognises one, the app shows a banner explaining what you can open. Snapchat describes the process in its Snapcode help page.

Read that prompt. If someone said they were sending their profile and the result is a website, ask why before continuing. You can pause without losing the chance to speak to them.

Compare the account with the conversation

Look at the username on the profile you reach. Does it match the handle the person shared earlier? A display name can look familiar even when the account is different. Our display name and username guide explains that distinction.

You can send a quick question through your existing conversation: “Is this the account you meant to share?” That is useful if a code was forwarded by someone else or copied from an old post.

Share your own code with a chosen audience

Your code appears in your Snapchat profile. Open it there and check which account you are using before saving or sharing it. This matters if you keep a separate account for people you meet online.

A code on a public page can reach people beyond the person you wanted to add. Think about whether that is what you want. The guide to sharing your chat username asks the same practical questions about making contact details public.

Review what a new friend could see

Before adding a new person, look at the audience for your posts. A casual chat contact may not belong in the same audience as close friends. Check your Snapchat Story privacy before posting something meant for a smaller group.

Also look at the photo and name attached to the account. You may be comfortable sharing both. The useful part is making that decision yourself before a new person opens the profile.

Keep a scan separate from trust

A working code does not establish who is behind an account. Continue the conversation at a pace that feels comfortable. Someone asking you to hurry through a sign-in screen or send a private code deserves a closer look.

If you also use Telegram, read the Telegram QR code guide. Each destination has its own account settings. Sharing a code in one app does not set the privacy choices in another.

Can I send someone else’s Snapcode?

Ask them first. A person may be happy to add you while keeping their account out of wider circulation. Let them choose how a new contact reaches them.

What if I scanned the wrong code?

Check what actually opened and whether you took another action. Close an unexpected destination. If you entered account details on a page you did not trust, use the account’s official recovery tools promptly.
