Chat Screenshots and Consent
Chat screenshots and consent belong in the same conversation. A message sent to one person can feel very different when it appears in a group. Before sharing, think about whose information is in the image and whether they expected that audience.
Ask before sharing a personal exchange
If you want to show a funny conversation to a friend, ask the other person first when the screenshot contains their words or details. Explain where you want to share it. Permission for one friend is not permission to post it publicly.
You can often tell the story in your own words without including the screenshot. Leave out details that identify the person. That may give you the conversation you wanted with your friend while respecting the original exchange.
Check more than the visible name
Cropping a username does not necessarily make a screenshot anonymous. A photo or distinctive story may still identify someone. Read the whole image, including anything visible around the conversation.
The same care applies to your own information. A browser tab or notification can reveal something you did not intend to include. If you need to send a screenshot to official support, keep it limited to what helps explain the issue.
Say what you expect in your own chats
You can tell a new contact that you prefer your messages to stay between you. That gives them a chance to agree before the conversation becomes personal. An agreement is useful, even though it cannot physically prevent copying.
The disappearing messages guide explains why an app setting does not remove that limit. Choose what you share with the possibility of a copy in mind.
Keep reports separate from public sharing
If a message contains a threat or rule violation, saving evidence for an official report serves a different purpose from posting it for attention. Use the platform’s reporting process and provide the relevant context privately.
Is removing the name always enough?
No. Someone familiar with the people involved may recognise the wording or other details. Review the whole image and ask whether sharing it is necessary.
What if somebody shared my messages against my wishes?
Ask for removal if it is safe to do so, and use the relevant platform’s report route. You can also end contact. Avoid escalating the situation by publishing their private messages in return.
