Snapchat Two-Factor Authentication: Setup Guide
Snapchat two-factor authentication adds another check when you sign in. Set it up while you can still access your account, and think through how you would sign in after losing your phone. The recovery step matters just as much as turning the setting on.
Open Snapchat two-factor authentication settings
From your profile, open Settings and choose My Account. Under Manage My Account, select Two-Factor Authentication and continue. You can choose an authentication app or SMS. Snapchat gives the current steps in its authentication app guide.
Use the settings inside your own app. If someone sends a message claiming you must enable security through their link, open Snapchat yourself and check there. You do not need a stranger to walk you through a sign-in.
Choose a method you can keep access to
An authentication app generates temporary login codes. SMS sends a code to the mobile number linked to the account. Snapchat asks you to keep both your phone number and email address up to date when using two-factor authentication.
If you choose SMS, check the linked number before completing setup. The official SMS instructions explain that option. Think about what happens when you change a phone or stop using a number.
Create a recovery code before you need it
In the two-factor settings, open Recovery Code and follow the steps to generate one. Store it somewhere protected that you could access if your phone were lost. Snapchat’s recovery code guide explains how this backup works.
Do not keep your only copy somewhere that depends entirely on the phone you are trying to recover from. Also avoid sharing it in a chat as a way to prove ownership of your account.
Keep login codes out of conversations
A person you meet online has no reason to receive your sign-in code. A request can sound harmless: perhaps they claim a code reached you by mistake. Read what the message says the code is for and keep it private.
The login code scams guide explains that situation in more detail. Adding someone through a Snapcode should not require sending them a code that gives access to your own account.
Review the setup after changing devices
Check your account recovery details while you still have access to the old device. Follow the official instructions for moving the method you use. Avoid assuming that every security setting moved correctly just because your chats are visible.
If you use Telegram too, its two-step verification settings need their own review. For the account you use here, read protecting your SextingZone account.
Does resetting my password replace the second check?
Snapchat says two-factor authentication still applies after a password reset. Plan your recovery method before losing access so that a reset is not your only idea for getting back in.
What happens after I use a recovery code?
Snapchat says that signing in with a recovery code turns two-factor authentication off. Return to the account settings and enable it again if you want to keep that protection.
